Short Guide 3 'Returns of the Colony 'Blue Books'

This guide provides a list of returns of the Colony for 1822-57.

The Return of the Colony (also known as 'Blue Books'), [CGS 1286], consist of sets of statistical returns of the Colony of New south Wales and of areas under its jurisdiction compiled annually from 1822 to 1857 by the Colonial Secretary for transmission to the Secretary of State for the Colonies in London. The 'Blue Books' were compiled retrospectively from groups of returns sent out from the Colonial Secretary's Office, which were filled in by the various officials, and then sent back to the Office.

State Records' Short Guides are designed to provide easy reference to record series relating to a particular subject or area of research.
